- More than 2/3 (66%) of the world’s poor – 17 million people – live in Asia-Pacific
- Of these, 430 million are in South Asia, 271 million in East Asia and 18 million in Central Asia
- Poverty in the region is diverse: South Asia has experiences growth mixed with widely variable progress on social development indicators; East Asia has significantly reduced poverty overall, even as challenges remain; Central Asia faces extreme geographic isolation, rapidly deteriorating indicators and severe ecological stress
- The region accounts for at least 47 percent of total works trade and half of the world’s total GDP
- 8.2 million people in Asia-Pacific are living with HIV.AIDS, including more than 1.2 million people infected since the end of 2003
- Gender equality remains a significant challenge in wide parts of Asia-Pacific; in South Asia, for example, only 61 percent of girls complete primary school, compared with 86 percent of boys.
