Introduction

2007 is the mid point for MDG achievement and while there has been much progress in Asia Pacific, many people are still living in absolute poverty. To address this, requires local poverty reduction (targeted interventions at the local level) and MDG localization (interventions to achieve locally adapted MDGs).

UNDP Asia & Pacific Regional Centre in Colombo (RCC) is organizing a regional workshop on "Local Poverty Reduction and MDG Localisation:  Good Practices and Lessons Learned’, in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 29-31 October 2007.

This workshop is limited to invitees only.  It will bring together development practitioners from government, civil society and international organizations.

Twenty case study papers (see draft Agenda) have been selected focusing on Asia Pacific but also covering Africa and Latin America.  The papers are grouped under six themes:

  • Employment Generation and Participatory Area Development
  • Local Economic Development
  • Agriculture and Rural Development for Poverty Reduction
  • Localization of MDGs & Monitoring
  • Social Safety Nets & Micro Finance
  • Community Mobilisation and Advocacy for the MDGs

The workshop objective is to discuss these twenty case studies to share knowledge and identify the factors that contribute to good practice for local poverty reduction and MDG localisation. The outputs of the workshop will be the case studies with accompanying  multimedia material and a generic summary of good practice for use by development practitioners.
